Chapter 14

Jeremiah rode back to the ranch. She’d said yes. Now what would he do? What had he gotten himself into?

Jacob had dinner on the table. After he said the blessing, they filled their plate and ate in their usual silence. Jeremiah’s stomach knotted up. When Jacob served apple pie and poured fresh cups of coffee Jeremiah couldn’t stand it any longer. He needed help. He cleared his throat. “Fellows, I need your help with something.”

Jacob put his fork down. “What can we do?”

Bob looked up from his dessert.

Jeremiah cleared his throat again. “I asked a young lady to come to the ranch on Saturday to have dinner, she and her friend.” He waited for their reactions.

Jacob bobbed his head up and down, a huge grin plastered on his face. “Now that is nice, Jeremiah. You need to know a young lady and to have a wife.”

“Whoa there, no one said anything about a wife.” Jeremiah protested.

“Of course not, just a friend who visits.” Bob grinned.

“That’s right and that’s all.” Jeremiah wasn’t even sure he and Emily were friends but at least she had said yes.

Bob stuffed another bite of apple pie in his mouth. “What do you want us to do?”

“Well, one thing is help me get this place looking good. And Jacob, would you prepare a meal for us? I mean something special.” Jeremiah searched the German’s face for understanding.

Jacob refilled Bob’s plate with a second piece of pie. “Of course, you not worry. We have a great dinner for the ladies.”

Jeremiah sighed with relief. “Good. Now I invited her to come and ride out to see the ranch. I need to decide on a horse. Do we have a nice extra saddle or should I go into town and buy one?” He looked from Bob to Jacob. They continued eating like this wasn’t the most nerve-racking moment of their lives. He ran a hand through his long hair. Why had he invited Emily out to the ranch?

Bob pushed his now empty plate to the middle of the table. “Relax, Jeremiah. Don’t worry. You’ll do fine. Get a haircut and bath on Friday. Saturday, put on a clean set of clothes that you would wear to church.” Bob picked up his cup and swallowed some coffee.

A haircut? Jeremiah’s anxiety grew. “What if I don’t know what to talk to her about? What if I act completely stupid?” He knew there was a real possibility of it.

Bob drained his coffee cup, looking at Jeremiah over the rim. “Then you will be acting normal. That’s how most of us men act around a pretty girl.”

Jeremiah took a deep breath and leaned back in his chair. “All right, I’ll try to be calm about it. I don’t know what got into me to even invite her out.”

Jacob beamed from across the table. He clearly enjoyed Jeremiah’s discomfort. “Just who is this person?”

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. It’s Miss Emily Johnson and her friend Mrs. Spencer.”

“Emily Johnson! You sure know how to aim high.
